Art in Boston: Catch the Tara Donovan Exhibit at Boston's ICA Before January 4th!

On a recent weekend visit to the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, a new addition to the region's collection of fine museums and event venues, we encountered the mesmerizing and thought provoking exhibit by American sculptor Tara Donovan what the Boston Globe called "the most beautiful things" you will see all year.

Utilizing everyday items such as Styrofoam cups, paper plates, mylar, straws, toothpicks and buttons, synthesized with tape, glue and form, Donovan's art forms float, entice and draw upon your imagination. A pile of buttons transforms into shivering stalagmites, while a cloud of Styrofoam cups serenely astonishes the daydreamer. We discovered a mystical and mountains wall gathering in peaks, all shaped from straws. One of our favorites was a long and narrow amber toned sculpture that alluded to a contemporary version of stained glass creating exquisite, tightly curling forms - all out of what finally appeared to be faded rolled plastic sheets - and if you peak through the curls, you will experience kaleidoscope like views of the harbor.

In the first new museum built in Boston in over 100 years, the ICA moved from the Back Bay to the Seaport District into a visionary building that articulates over the waterfront. Already the leading institute in contemporary art for over 70 years, this iconic environment, conceived by award-winning architects Diller Scofidio and Renfro, is a contemplative space that explores and integrates seamlessly architecture, design, performance space, galleries and media. Inside or out, from the lighted gallery box to the water cafe and plaza, event guests or institute visitors will experience the influence of the water blended with expansive light and airy space.
